just one file

By Dan - 2005-05-08 14:07

Hello,

It would be nice to have just one big file to download. It's a hassle to do it one by one.

Actually, breaking the file into individual chapters is much better! It's more like natural reading, and even more importantly, it assures compatibility with any MP3 player.

Nearly all players handle elapsed time on files in the format of MM:SS (where "M" = minutes and "S" = seconds). Books recorded as one huge, unwieldy file will not play. Once the elapsed time reaches 99:99, the player will either shut down or automatically rewind to the beginning of the file. A few players (not many) will continue to play the file, but the elapsed time display will not work which is BIG problem unless your player has a dedicated bookmark feature.

The only players that will play large files properly are those that handle elapsed time as either MMMM:SS or else as HH:MM:SS (where "H" = hours). Very few player do that, particularly flash players, and that information is not included in manufacturer's specifications. "Voices in the Dark" handled this potential problem perfectly by breaking a large book into individual chapters. Thank you "Voices in the Dark"!

Regards,

I believe what Dan is saying is that it would be easier to download everything all at once using something along the lines of a zip file.

Actually I prefer the single chapter format. When I fall asleep during my bedtime story, it is easier to find where Morpheus intruded.

If you are using FireFox there is an add-on called DownThemAll that allows you to set the type of file you want (mp3), and it will automatically download all the files on the active page to a folder on your harddrive.

Looking forward to this version, I love Cory's writing.

I think there's a misunderstanding here. A zip file leaves the multiple file structure intact. You download it to your pc, unzip it and then separate files are all there. They are handy and help conserve download time and bandwidth usage.

Zip files and downloads...

By SoulDrum - 2008-04-12 02:46

I agree - zip files would be wonderful: One with all chapters as separate files when unzipped. It would make accessing these audio books so much easier...

As would a working podcast.

The DownThemAll add-on doesn't work because of the .php links to the audio files.

On the brighter side: Thanks to all the readers and Sean and Dawn. This site and the audio book and other resources for them are fantastic! I'm sure all will only get better with time and even more contributions.

At the end of the summer when I slow down I'll sign up to be a reader!

ciao, SoulDrum - n3r8d

Problem downloading

By Leon - 2008-04-14 05:38

When I click on any of the download links, my Windows Media Player opens and starts playing the story. How do I get my PC to download the file on my HDD. I also have Download Express, but the right-click option just downloads the .php link and not the file. Any help / suggestions?

Any suggestions for Mac users? (Clicking "download" only opens it in quicktime in my browser and I can't actually download it)

On a Mac, right click (or Option click) and select Save Linked File from the contextual menu. The file will be saved to your Downloads folder.

Unfortunately, the saved file is a .php, so the simplest way to download is to open each link individually and save the resulting mp3.

Any reason this isn't on the podcast or newsfeed?

Running Tiger on my iMac. If I right-click and choose "save as", then change the title (from seemingly php file) to something appropriate, the result gets downloaded as an mp3 file. If I option-click, the mp3 downloads automatically and has a full title, including title of book, author, what chapter, etc.
